Încerc să nu dau acestui blog o înclinaţie prea militantă pentru patrimoniul naţional, aflat de multe ori în stare precară. Există alte bloguri şi alte mijloace de acţiune pentru această luptă uriaşă. Eu aici vreau să arăt partea cu soare a diferitelor locuri vizitate, pentru că prea des ne închidem în reflexe negativiste despre România, o ţară frumoasă prin peisajele sale naturale dar şi prin patrimoniul construit, de-a lungul secolelor, de locuitorii ţării. Este loc şi pentru optimism în România.
Uneori însă, partea cu soare nu prea există, şi atunci despre ce să scriu?
Pentru mine Staţiunea Băile Herculane are un aer de sit arheologic. Aici puteţi admira, în ruină, arhitectură austriacă de secol 18 şi 19. Este o crimă la adresa turismului naţional starea deplorabilă în care este lăsat acest autentic Karlovy Vary românesc. Nu este acceptabilă negăsirea unei soluţii pentru staţiunea istorică, în timp ce pe malurile Cernei înfloresc pensiuni kitschoase şi birturi stridente.
M-am uitat cu atenţie în jur: numărul de clădiri în paragină nu este chiar atât de mare pe cât credeam iniţial. Este adevărat că sunt toate clădiri de mari dimensiuni, impunătoare, unde ar fi nevoie de investiţii mari şi eforturi herculeene, pentru a face un joc de cuvinte (numele stațiunii vine de la eroul înfățișat într-un mozaic găsit în vestigiile romane). Dar s-ar putea, dacă s-ar vrea. Dacă 5 dintre aceste vechi hoteluri s-ar restaura, faţa staţiunii istorice ar fi schimbată. Ar trebui să fie o prioritate naţională. Costurile sunt uriaşe, de acord, dar şi profiturile ar fi pe măsură.
O licărire de speranţă a apărut anul trecut prin începerea restaurării Vilei Elisabeta (Elisabeta de Wittelsbach, Împărăteasa Austriei, Regina Ungariei, mai bine cunoscută sub numele "Sissi"). Viluţa are dimensiuni modeste (faţă de marile hoteluri dimprejur), restaurarea nu pare a fi o muncă titanică. Pe deasupra, finanţarea a provenit din fondurile strânse cu ajutorul emisiunii "Restaurare" pe TVR1, adică de la noi, românii iubitori de patrimoniu. Din păcate, se pare că fondurile strânse au fost insufuciente (sau ineficient folosite?), iar TVR nu a mai reluat emisiunea (de ce?!).

Băile Herculane Resort
I'm trying not to give this blog a too militant tone on national heritage and its precarious state. There are other blogs and means for this huge task. Here I just want to show, mainly, the sunny side of the places I see, for too often we encounter negative reflexes regarding Romania, otherwise a beautiful country, both because its natural scenery and the built environment, a work of centuries. There is place for optimism in Romania.
Sometimes, however, the sunny side doesn't really exist, so what can I write about?
For me, the Băile Herculane Resort looks like an archaeological site. Here you can admire, in ruins, Austrian architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is a crime for the tourist industry the sad state in which this Romanian Karlovy Vary is left. It's not acceptable to fail in finding a solution for the historic resort, while on the Cerna banks appear all sorts of kitsch bars and ugly villas.
I looked attentively around: the number of buildings in severe disrepair is not so big as I initially thought. It's true that they are all quite big, needing large investments and herculean efforts, to make a play on words (Băile Herculane - Hercules' baths; the name comes from a mosaic depicting the hero, found on the Roman site). But it could be done, if there was will. If only 5 of these old hotels were restored, the face of this historic resort would be changed. It should be a national priority. The costs would be large, but the rewards accordingly.
A small glimmer of hope appeared last year when the restoration of the Elisabeth Villa was started. Elisabeth, better known as Sissi, Empress of Austria, Queen of Hungary, who vacationed several times at Băile Herculane. The villa is pretty small compared to other buildings around, the restorations should have gone smoothly, aided by the mony collected in the show "Restoration", on national television. Unfortunately, the funds were insufficient (or inefficiently used) and TVR never made a sequel (why?).
