Ca fantome de mari veacuri pe eroii lor jălesc;

Cozia Monastery

"The towers' shadows lie over the waves:
Towards both shores they extend themselves,
And the waves' proud, foamy generations
The old monastery wall they rhythmically strike"

Cozia Monastery, the emblematical foundation of Prince Mircea the Old (1386-1418), is found on the main Sibiu - Râmnicu Vâlcea national road, a busy one. In the Middle Ages it was a seldom taken road because it was far rougher. Today waves of cars pass before the monastery gates. Behind it flows the Olt river and the forrest can be admired on Cozia mountain.
The bustle in front of the monastery (at the parking) may be annoying, but once the threshold crossed, you find again the solemnity of this historical holy place. The massive walls and the old paintings remind us that we are in one of the oldest monasteries of Romania. In narthex (the front part) you have the graves of Mircea the Old and of Tudora, mother of Michael the Brave (1593-1601).
The church building is a lace of stone and brick. For instance, I always like the sculpted stone disks, all of them in a different pattern. The rest of the buildings, more recent, have a harmonious architecture. On the other side of the road is another small church, built in the times of Radu Paisie (middle of the 16h century), in a similar architectural style. Don't forget to visit the museum: it has a lot of interesting exhibits and you also have a loggia with a superb view of the Olt river.

"The world awaits... the high towers
Like the ghosts of great ages their heroes they mourn;
And the waves' proud, foamy generations

The old monastery wall they rhythmically strike"
("Umbra lui Mircea - La Cozia" de Grigore Alexandrescu (1844), prima şi ultima strofă - "Mircea's shadow - At Cozia" peom by Grigore Alexandrescu (1844), first and last stanzas - free translation by the author of the blog).
