The Textile Industry Museum in Cisnădie

I saw the sign leading to the Textile Industry Museum by chance, while walking on the main street. It pointed to a very beautiful house. I was not tempted to enter at first, because the subject does not particularly interest me. However, the guide was right at the entrance and encouraged me to give it a chance. In fact one can say he is the soul of the museum, director and guide at the same time. He gave me a very interesting tour, full of stories and anecdotes. I was happy to see in the museum a traditional loom (picture 1) as big as the one which my grandmother assembled one winter 25 years ago. Se sewed for several weeks and we still have around the house some of the fabric towels sowed then.
Other interesting pieces were the various woolcards (pictures 1 and 2). The better the woolcard, the more expensive. Several craftsmen could join together to purchase one.
Story goes that young men searching for a spouse would come to Cisnădie because the city had so many girls working in the textile industry.
Today the museum is only the memory of a dead industry, for after the Revolution of 1989 the thousands of employees dwindled to hundreds then mere tens as the activity faded. The machines were scrapped and everything stopped.
In older (communist) times, Cisnădie carpets and rugs were massively exported, hardly anything was kept for the home market. It is said that the free market killed the industry, that competition from Turkey or Iran was too strong. But how could there be no future for the textile industry in Cisnădie? Can now a once famous brand in Romania rise from its own ashes? Let's hope that in the future there shall be more than just a textile museum in Cisnădie.
