Ruse - The History Museum

Near the Alexander Battenberg park, at the end of Alexandrovska street, you can see the History Museum, covering the city and the region.
The building is imposing and the ante and interbellum coat of arms of Bulgaria adorns its pediment. It is very similar to the present coat of arms and originates at least in The Second Bulgarian Kingdom (14th century). The coat or arms does not yet bear the state motto, "Unity makes strength", a good counsel for any people. The Bulgarians have an old legend symbolizing this principle, of Khan Kubrat's arrows which could be easily broken one by one, but not when raised in a bundle.
According to popular interpretation, the three lions represent the historic regions of Bulgaria: Moesia, Macedonia and Thrace (the two latter are only partly in Bulgaria). It is probably a rather recent myth.
The museum is not very large and I was disappointed that it does not cover the modern period. The first floor was hosting a temporary exhibition about the Turkish minority in Bulgaria, so I had to content myself with information about Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The History Museum in Tutrakan made up for my disappointment.
In Roman times on the site of Ruse there was the colony of Sexaginta Prista, part of the Danubian limes. It was destroyed by the barbarian invasions, rebuilt, once again razed during the campaigns of Romanian prince Michael the Brave over the Danube. Rebuilt by the Turks, it became the most important city in Bulgaria by the mid 19th century, playing a major role in the national revival.
