Mânăstirea "Sfinții Trei Ierarhi"

Situată în inima Iașului, pe bulevardul Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt, Mânăstirea "Sfinții Trei Ierarhi" uimește prin delicatețea sculpturii fațadei, o adevărată dantelă din piatră.

Found in the heart of Iași, on the main boulevard, Stephen the Great and Holy, the "Three Holy Hierarchs" monastery is delicately sculpted, like stone lace.

Este cea mai de seamă ctitorie a domnitorului Vasile Lupu (1634 - 1653) și totodată necropola familiei domnitorului, dar și locul de veci al lui Alexandru Ioan Cuza. 

Iubitor de lux, Vasile Lupu s-a asigurat că această realizare iese în evidență, în acest caz prin sculptarea întregii fațade de piatră, fapt unic în arhitectura românească.

It is the most important foundation of Prince Vasile Lupu (1634 - 1653) and it is also his family's necropolis. The remains of Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza are also found there.

As he loved luxury, Prince Lupu ensured that this foundation stands out, so he has the whole facade intricately sculpted. It is unique in Romanian architecture.

Pisania mânăstirii, domnitorul a lăsat mărturie: "... am ridicat această ctitorie în numele celor trei sfinți: Vasile cel Mare, Grigore Teologul, Ioan Gură de Aur și a fost sfințită în luna mai, ziua a șasea a anului 7147 (1639)".

The original inscription reads "... I erected this Monastery in the name of the three saints: Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom and it was blessed in May, the sixth day of the year 7147 (1639)"

M-am străduit un pic să-mi iasă pozele; nu e ușor iarna și a fost mai tot timpul înnorat. 

Într-una din seri am fost întâmpinat la poarta mânăstirii de un om care așteaptă în mod obișnuit pomană acolo. Văzând că tot caut unghiuri spre turle, m-a apostrofat:

"Pentru fotografie, trebuie două puncte de fugă. Aici nu sunt două puncte, aici e o fațadă care nu merge. Crezi că te pricepi la fotografie? Habar nu ai." 

Un pic tulburător, un om al străzii să-ți vorbească de "puncte de fugă", dar aparențele sunt înșelătoare, fiecare om are o poveste, iar locurile sfinte cu atât mai mult prilejuiesc întâmplări neobișnuite.

I was trying to take a few good shots, and it is not easy in a cloudy winter day.

One evening I was greeted at the monastery gate with a man who probably usually waits for alms. He said to me: 

"For pictures, you need two vanishing points. Here, you can't have two vanishing points, here you have a facade and it doesn't work. You think you know photography? You know nothing."

A bit disturbing, a homeless man talking to you about "vanishing points", but appearances can be deceiving, every man has his story and holy places can occasion unusual events.

În curtea mânăstirii, Vasile Lupu a înființat o școală, "Academia Vasiliană", precum și o tiparniță, ctitoria fiind mai multe secole un punct de reper nu doar religios ci și cultural.

In the monastery courtyard. Vasile Lupu founded a school, the "Basilian Academy", as well as a printing press. His foundation was for many centuries a religious and cultural focal point.

Închisă o perioadă de regimul comunist, mânăstirea a fost redeschisă după anul 1989 și este astăzi un reper deschis în inima Iașului.

The Communist regime closed down the monastery, but it was reopened after 1989 and it is again an open beacon in the heart of the city.
