Strehaia Monastery

Strehaia Monastery's walls rise boldly in the middle of the town of the same name, on the road between Craiova and Drobeta Turnu-Severin. This is the site where the princely court of the Craioveşti boyars existed.
The history of this important family begins with Neagoe Strehăianul ("of Strehaia"). Craioveşti means "of Craiova". It was the seat of the Ban of Craiova for 20 years before moving to Craiova, now a mjor city in Romania. The Ban was the highest boyar title after the prince.
The Craioveşti family dominated the political life of Wallachia in the early 16th century, before, during and after the reign of prince Neagoe Basarab. They even succeeded in putting member of their family on the throne: Neagoe Basarab (1512-1521), Matei Basarab (1632-1654) and Constantin Brâncoveanu (1688-1714).
Michael the Brave (1593-1601) had his seat here as Ban of Mehedinţi and was also the seat of Prince Radu Mihnea in 1602 in a time of turmoil following the assasination of Michael the Brave. Radu Mihnea had to govern from Strehaia as the throne was occupied by Radu Şerban (1602-1611), an opponent of the Ottomans. the latter managed to keep his throne for 10 years, continuing the policy of independance of Michael the Brave, supported by the Habsburgs in the broader setting of the Long War.
Prince Radu Mihnea, loyal to the Ottomans, was finally brought back on the throne. He loved luxury and pomp but not everything was negative about him. Between 1612-1626 he ruled alternatively in Wallachia and Moldova, encouraging closer ties between the two Romanian principalities. He also built Radu Vodă Monastery in Bucharest, one of the finest.
The present monastery in Stehaia was built by Constantin Brâncoveanu. There was also a princely residence next to it, but now only the cellar ruins survive.
Between 1718-1739 Oltenia was occupied by the Austrian Empire, after the Peace of Passarowitz. Several walled monasteries, including Strehaia were surveyed and taken into consideration to serve as fortifications. You can admire an accurate sketch made for military purposes by Major Weiss at the front entrance.
Tudor Vladimirescu used Strehaia Monastery as a stronghold during the Wallachian Uprising of 1821.
In front of the monastery a cross remembers the local heroes of the War of Independence of 1877-1878.
