La Ploieşti se află o biserică foarte interesantă, atipică pentru sudul ţării şi mai ales foarte înaltă. De fapt ceea ce vedem noi, ceea ce ne atrage atenţia la Catedrala Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul este un turn clopotniţă construit la sfârşitul anilor '30 de arhitectul Toma T. Socolescu (1883-1960). În spatele masivei clopotniţe se află, sau mai degrabă se afla, o biserică mai veche din secolul 19. Planul era ca şi biserica să fie înlocuită cu una nouă, dar au venit războiul şi apoi comuniştii şi nu s-a mai făcut nimic. Proiectul s-a reluat de curând iar în spatele clopotniţei se ridică o biserică demnă de lucrarea marelui arhitect Socolescu (proiectul este executat de cunoscutul arhitect prahovean Călin Hoinărescu).
Lumina capricioasă şi lucrările în desfăşurare nu au permis surprinderea unei imagini complete a catedralei, dar despre ea vom mai vorbi.
Saint John the Baptist Cathedral in Ploieşti
Ploieşti has an interesting cathedral, unusual for southern Romania, in that it has a prominent, very tall bell tower. In fact, the bell tower was a 1930's addition by architect Toma T. Socolescu (1883-1960). Behind the massive construction there used to be a smaller, 19th century church. The plan was to replace it with a grand cathedral, but war and the Communist regime postponed it. Recently the plan was restarted and now a church more in tone with architect Socolescu's construction is beign erected. The project is headed by a renowned architect from Prahova County, Călin Hoinărescu.
Dimming light and the construction site didn't allow me to take a complete image of the cathedral, but we shall get back to it very soon.
